Propane Theft
October 23, 2015

The Juneau Police Department would like the public to be on the lookout for anyone trying to sell new propane cylinders or having an unusual number of new propane bottles.

On October 19th, 2015, employees arriving to work at Amerigas reported five filled 20 pound propane bottles were stolen from that business. The suspect likely climbed over the fence surrounding Amerigas. Several other cylinders and tools the person was trying to take were discarded outside the fence. There are five bottles still missing.

Series of Bicycle Thefts
October 16, 2015

There have been a series of bicycle and bicycle accessory thefts between October 1st, 2015 and October 16th, 2015. Ten cases have been documented and include the theft of lights only off one bicycle. The theft of the lights was caught on video surveillance at Glacier Valley Elementary School. The suspect appears as if he could also be the suspect who took a bicycle from Thunder Mountain High School, though the quality of that video is poor and the suspect hides his face. It is not known if the other thefts are related to this same suspect.

Most of the thefts have been in the central part of the Mendenhall Valley. Some of the bicycles had locks cut but many were not secured.

Theft from Vehicle on Taku Boulevard
October 09, 2015

During the early morning hours of October 6th, 2015, someone took surveying tools out of a vehicle parked in the 4200 Block of Taku Boulevard. At about 3:45 in the morning, a woman heard noises and looked outside to see a vehicle driving away. Later in the morning her husband saw that tools had been taken from his vehicle.

The tools that were taken include a Spectra 500 Laser Level, two 20 volt Dewalt drills, and a bag containing various small tools. The vehicle seen driving away was an older, small pickup. It may have been a Ford Ranger or Chevy S-10 and had a canopy on the back. The headlights were square. It passed under a street light and the woman saw that the pickup was probably light blue.

Business Burglary on Jordan Avenue
October 02, 2015

During the night of September 28th, 2015, to September 29th, 2015, someone broke a window into a business in the 2200 block of Jordan Avenue. The suspect took a Think Pad laptop and a rifle. The rifle is a Game Master 760, pump action 30.06 with a scope. The rifle is only worth about $500 but has sentimental value as it was given to the owner by his late father.

Robbery of Travelodge Hotel
September 24, 2015

On September 23rd, at about 8:30 in the evening, a man robbed the Travelodge Hotel in the 9200 block of Glacier Highway and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. The man dressed all in black and appeared to have stuffed material into his sweatshirt to alter his body shape. He also wore sunglasses, had his hood up, and a mask over the lower part of his face. The man had his right hand in a cloth bag and pointed that bag in the direction of the clerk but did not display a weapon.

The victim estimated the suspect is about 30 years old and white. He is about 5’9". The suspect presented a garbage bag and ordered the employee to put the cash in the bag. The suspect fled out the laundry room door toward Lee Smith Drive. The victim followed and saw the man run toward O’Day Drive.

Vandalism of the New Library Building
September 17, 2015

On two occasions between September 1st, 2015 and September 8th, 2015, two different windows at the library under construction on Riverside Drive were vandalized. It appears the windows were shot, possibly with a BB gun.

It will cost about $4,000 to replace the two windows. The Juneau Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the person or people responsible for the damage.

Fugitive David John Dempsey Guthrie
September 10, 2015

The Juneau Police Department would like the public’s assistance in locating a 31 year old Juneau man who has multiple outstanding warrants some of which stem from drug charges.

David John Dempsey Guthrie has five warrants total issued over the last six months. One warrant is a no bail warrant naming Guthrie as an absconder from Department of Corrections supervision. There are two $20,000 warrants out of Ketchikan associated with drug charges. There are also two $1,000 warrants issued out of Juneau associated with assault and making a false report. Guthrie is believed to be in Juneau although he is from Ketchikan.

Burglary of Downtown Liquor Store
September 03, 2015

On August 31st, 2015, at about 1:16 in the morning, Juneau Police Department officers responded to an alarm from Thibodeau’s Home Liquor at 425 Whittier Street. Officers responded and found surveillance video showing a man wearing a mask had used a rock to break a window to get into the store. The man tried to get into two different cash registers but was unsuccessful both times. He then took a box of cartons of American Spirit cigarettes. The retail value of the cigarettes is $3,600. The value of the window is $1,000.

The burglar was wearing a white or light grey Under Armor hooded sweatshirt with a green hood. When he leaves the store he pushes the hood back to show dark hair several inches long in front. He is also wearing skater shoes and blue jeans.

Fugitive Gregory Dewayne Crowley
August 27, 2015

On August 26th, 2015, at about 4:00 in the afternoon, an off-duty Juneau Police Department officer spotted 30 year old Gregory Dewayne Crowley, a person with four current warrants for his arrest. Crowley was at a trailhead near Valley Boulevard. On-duty officers responded but were unable to locate Crowley, who had fled along the trail. All of Crowley’s warrants were issued in mid-2014 and he has avoided arrest since then. JPD would like to ask for the public’s assistance in locating Crowley.

Two of Crowley’s warrants are for misconduct involving drugs. JPD officers have found that people involved with drugs often carry weapons though there is no specific information about Crowley having weapons. The public is urged to use caution and not approach Crowley. The other two warrants are associated with failure to appear in court. One warrant stems from a theft charge and the other warrant stems from charges of criminal trespass and making a false report.

Don Abel's Burglary
August 18, 2015

On August 8th, 2015, at about 1:30 in the morning, a person went into Don Abel’s Building Supply and took almost $4,000 worth of tools and knives. There is video surveillance of a person in dark clothing entering the store and taking items. The face of the suspect is not well-lit so identification from the video alone is difficult.

JPD may have collected some of the stolen tools from a person of interest who was arrested on August 12, 2015, for an unrelated burglary. The person of interest in the Don Abel burglary is 25 year old Albert M. Mazon of Juneau.

A large amount of property is unaccounted for and may have been hidden or is in the possession of other people. Dozens of tools are still missing along with about forty knives that were taken from a display case. JPD is releasing catalogue pictures of some of the knives in an attempt to get assistance from the public in finding more of the stolen items and identifying any additional suspects.

Theft at 15600 block of Glacier Highway
August 06, 2015

On July 20, 2015, at about 1:00 in the afternoon, a 44 year old Capital City Fire and Rescue firefighter reported his locked truck was broken into and $6300 worth of items taken. The theft happened over the weekend of July 18-19 while the pickup was parked in the 15600 block of Glacier Highway. The suspect or suspects took firefighter bunker gear with a red fire helmet. The firefighter gear is worth about $3000.

The suspect also took about $3300 worth of tools. The stolen tools include a Craftsman black took box filled with tools, a Milwaukee impact driver and heat gun, and a diesel compression kit, to name just a few items. Also missing is a set of jumper cables and ratchet straps.

Fraudulent Use of an Access Device: ATM withdrawal
July 29, 2015

On June 30, 2015, a woman reported that she had discovered a state issued credit card had been taken from her desk in the State Office Building. The woman learned the card was missing after she was asked about a $500 withdrawal from a Juneau Wells Fargo ATM. The woman had been storing the card in her desk with a note that provided the access code.

The investigation confirmed the card was used to withdraw $500 cash on June 19, 2015. There were also two unsuccessful attempts to make withdrawals with the card later that day at two different banks.

An officer of the Juneau Police Department served a search warrant on Wells Fargo and acquired pictures from the ATM camera. JPD has not yet been able to identify the man so is now asking for the public’s assistance.

Assault on 4th Street
July 21, 2015

On July 16, 2015, at about 3:23 in the morning, a 37 year old Juneau man reported he was assaulted in the 100 block of 4th Street, near the Capitol. The victim said a man he did not know threatened him with a silver-colored gun and a metal bat. Video of the area supports the victim’s statement, showing a man leaving the area with what appears to be a metal bat.

The victim describes the assailant as having tan skin, short black hair, and was about 5’08" inches tall and 180 pounds. He was not wearing a baseball hat in the video but the victim says the man was wearing a hat.

The victim ran down Seward Street, across Front Street, and down Franklin Street then called JPD. Officers responded to the area and did not locate anyone matching the description but saw a baseball hat in the street patrolling officers did not see earlier that night. That hat was collected since it is possible it had been worn by the suspect prior to the assault.

Vehicle Theft / Shoplifting
July 02, 2015

On June 28, 2015, at about 8:00 in the evening, a white male driving a stolen 1998 green Ford Explorer shoplifted from a grocery store and threatened the store employee who contacted him.

The suspect went into Safeway and put about nine items into a cart, including meat and a cheesecake. An employee noticed he was leaving without paying and contacted him. The man said to the female employee, "Ma’am, I will hurt you" and put his hand inside his jacket as though he had a weapon. The employee moved away from the man but used her phone to take a picture of him and the vehicle he was driving. She described the suspect as having scruffy facial hair and being extremely thin. He was wearing a black, hooded rain jacket and dark pants, possibly jeans. The man loaded the stolen groceries into the vehicle and drove away.

The employee also documented the license plate of the vehicle. It was later determined that the Explorer been stolen from a residence on Trafalgar Avenue.

Several hours after the theft at Safeway a JPD officer attempted a traffic stop on the involved vehicle. The driver fled on foot letting the stolen vehicle roll into a parked car in the 8500 block of Nugget Place. The driver was not located.

Theft of iPad at Fred Meyer
June 25, 2015

UPDATE:

A 31 year old Juneau woman has been identified as the suspect in this case. This Crime Line report generated multiple tips all on different people. On June 28, 2015, someone did report the woman who ultimately was the suspect through an anonymous tip on Crime Line. This report was not followed up on immediately and later that same day Fred Meyer loss prevention staff reported the woman was back in the store and the car was in the parking lot. An officer contacted the woman and the iPad was recovered. Charges are being filed with a prosecutor. Since the woman was not arrested the name of the suspect will not be released until she is charged, if that is the prosecutor`s decision. JPD would like to thank all the participating tipsters for trying to help resolve this case.

On June 18, 2015, a man reported he left his Ipad at a check stand at Fred Meyer at about 10:00 that morning. He returned to the store about thirty minutes later when he realized what he had done. The man contacted Fred Meyer security who found surveillance video showing the customer after the man, a woman with long reddish brown hair all the way down her back, appeared to take the Ipad.

The woman is described as a heavy-set white female is very long hair. She has a mannerism of flipping her hair back over her shoulder frequently. She was wearing tan pants and a dark shirt. She left the store in what appears to be a green Ford Taurus, or similar model, station wagon. The video did not capture the license plate.

Attempted Theft at Downtown IGA
June 16, 2015

On June 15, 2015, at about 3:30 in the afternoon, the Juneau Police Department received a report that three people working together just tried to steal over $600 worth of items from the IGA store at 615 West Willoughby Avenue. An employee confronted one of the two male suspects when he tried to leave through the back door. The man dropped the bag he had stuffed in the hardware section in the back of the store. The suspect told the employee he was leaving. The store employee followed him to a vehicle the man drove away. The employee used his cell phone to take pictures of the man and the vehicle.

The man and woman who were with the man who attempted the theft were distracting store employees at the time of the attempted theft. They ran after the other male was confronted. The items the man attempted to steal were mostly small tools like sockets, he also took ropes, a tool bag, and a hole saw to name a few items. The vehicle the man left in was a blue Ford Expedition with a rear area that seemed to be full of stereo equipment and tools.

Vehicle Arson on Trafalgar Ave.

On June 9th, 2015, at about 01:00 in the morning, a mini-van was reported to be on fire in the 4000 block of Trafalgar Avenue. The 2002 vehicle was a total loss by the time Capital City Fire and Rescue were able to put out the fire. The Juneau Police Department is investigating the fire as suspicious.

There is a witness who heard a loud bang, looked outside, and saw the vehicle was on fire. She ran to the scene and saw a man walking from the area who started to run when he saw the witness. The witness described the man as native, 5’9", and slender. He was wearing a gray sweater, a gray hat, blue jeans, and white shoes.

Burglary at the CMT Convenience Store at Miners Mercantile
May 29, 2015

On May 24, 2015, at about 3:30 in the morning, a man burglarized the CMT Convenience Store in the Miners Mercantile building at 225 Front Street. The suspect got away with about $3000 worth of silver dollar coins and four tablet style computers.

There is surveillance video and JPD is releasing a video of the surveillance screens that show the suspect moving through the store. The man is wearing a mask. You can see that he is wearing gloves and a watch on his right wrist. He is also wearing a cell phone case horizontally on his right hip. The time on the video is inaccurate.

One person of interest has been identified and after initial contact with an officer, investigators have not been able to locate him. The person of interest is 52 year old Juneau resident Ronald McKinney. He is known to travel between Juneau and Seattle.

The Juneau Police Department is seeking information about both the burglary and the current location of McKinney.

Strong Arm Robbery at Sunny Point
May 15, 2015

On 05/14/2015, at approximately 4:51 PM, a 44 year old female resident reported an attempted strong arm robbery near Sunny Point. In essence, the victim reported that she had been walking toward the Sunny Point parking lot, at approximately 3:45 PM, when she was approached by two men.

The first male was described as an Alaska Native adult, mid to late 20’s in age, approximately 5’11” tall, 180 pounds, longer hair but not past his eyes or ears, and clean shaven. The male was wearing a grey t-shirt and white ball cap.

The second male was described as possibly Hispanic, approximately 5’7” tall, 180 pounds, with short hair. No clothing description was provided.

The female victim said she was approached by the men in the Sunny Point Parking lot. The first male suddenly lunged toward the victim and attempted to steal her backpack off her arm. The second male appeared surprised by the first male’s actions. The female victim fought back and screamed that she was going to call the police. Both men then fled on foot toward the Glacier Highway. The backpack was not stolen. The female victim sustained an abrasion to her left elbow.

Burglary and Theft Downtown Ongoing Investigation
May 08, 2015

The Juneau Police Department is asking the public to help with two burglaries and thefts that involved an on-foot suspect pushing carts in downtown Juneau during the night of May 5th to the morning of May 6th. A suspect has been arrested for half of the potential charges but more information is being sought on his or another suspect

At about 8:30 a.m., on May 6th, a citizen reported to JPD that it seemed it seemed suspicious a man was pushing a shopping cart full of copper sheets down a hill and through an alley near the Salvation Army building. The citizen making the report said there is a house with copper shingles on Eighth Street. A few minutes later an animal control officer reported he found a shopping cart containing the sheets of copper on Village Street and there is blood on the copper.

The homeowner on Eighth Street, who is having roof work done, was contacted and checked his construction supplies finding copper shingles were missing and there was blood in the area where the shingles had been stored. He said he and his wife did hear their dog responding to something, they thought a bear, the night of May 5th at about 10:30 p.m..

In the same area as the shingles in the shopping cart a Village Street resident reported finding a cart that appeared to be a device for spraying fluid. That cart was identified as one stolen from the construction site at Centennial Hall the same night the shingles were taken. That cart mixes fluid for roofing and is worth $6,000, if you are a roofer. It has little value except for being used for roofing work.

32 year old Shelton Harlan Gleaton, volunteered to the responding officers that he had found the shingles on Village Street. Gleaton`s hands were bloody and he matched the caller`s description of the man pushing the shopping cart. He was arrested for Burglary in the First Degree, a class B felony, and Theft in the Second Degree, a class C felony. The areas of blood were swabbed and are being tested. No one has been charged with the theft from the construction site at this time.
